R Maurice Conly was an official artist of the Royal New Zealand Airforce, where he held the rank of squadron leader. He served in the Pacific during the Second World War, and later in Vietnam. He also undertook duties for the RNZAF in Antarctica.

Two of Conly’s works from the Pacific were included in the 1952 Exhibition of Official War Paintings by New Zealand Artists.
